Gianfranco Ricci was born in Milan in 1972. At the age of seven he began studying violin and, under the guidance of Osvaldo Scilla, graduated with honors in 1993 from the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan. In 1989 he was awarded first place at the “Città di Tortona” music competition and in 1998 he won the “Città di Varazze” international violin competition. From his early years of study, he has been passionately interested in the performance practice of ancient music, with original instruments of the period. At the Milan Conservatory he was an assistant and collaborator in the internal and public activities of the specialized chamber music course (periods: baroque, pre-classical, classical and pre-romantic), held by C. M. Sartori; with the same man he also takes part in tours in Italy and abroad as first violin, with the baroque ensemble “Accademia del ‘700 Italiano”. In 2005, he was the first in Italy to obtain, again at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan and under the guidance of Cinzia Barbagelata, the second level degree in baroque violin, obtaining top marks, honors and mention. He perfected, simultaneously and subsequently for almost ten years, the study of the baroque violin repertoire with Stefano Montanari at the Scuola Civica in Milan. He has collaborated with the major Italian baroque ensembles such as Accademia Bizantina and Europa Galante. He is currently the concertmaster of the second violins of the Giuseppe Verdi Symphony Orchestra of Milan, with which he has worked conducted by the most famous conductors and with which he has made prestigious recordings for the Decca and Deutsche Grammophon labels. Since its foundation in 2008, he has been the concertmaster of the laBarocca ensemble, with which he has participated in numerous concerts in Italy and Europe and in various recordings.
